Epic Adventures Fishing Diary - 25 March - 12 April 2010

We're into Autumn mode now and that means the kingfish are feasting up large and the snapper have moved into the shallows.

Bill and Reuben Woods from Australia spent two days with us and got into some awesome fishing for both kingfish and snapper.  We had a wild day in the shallows where the guys tagged about a dozen kingfish all caught on livebaits and the kingfish had them pulled up against the rail in 10m of water!!!

The softbaiting worked a treat, both on the snapper and the kingfish, Bill's kingi put up an epic scrap on 8pd softbait gear!

Bill got a cracker snapper in 8m of water on a 5" Nuclear Chicken - this was some scrap!  Bill got a few pics and released the snapper - its still mooching around the reef waiting for someone else to catch it

Lori and Jerry Brown from the USA were also into some great action, Gerry was run ragged on a half dozen real nice kingfish in the shallows, and had a 20kg fish monstered by a Bronze whaler right by the boat.

It was a real honour to have the Pony Liu and the Taiwanese Jigging Master crew on board filming their new DVD on trailer boat jigging.  Here me and Tobez strike a pose with Pony and the team. All our Jigging rods are predominantly Jigging Master and I am continually blown away by the amount of fish they catch and the punishment they take, Pony has been the leader in the jigging market and has helped revoluntise the sport of fishing so it was an honour not only to meet him but to have him filming on the boat.

We caught about 40 kingfish over the day with the boys, and you'll have to wait to see the action.  The boys were fishing 150 - 185 gm rods so there were a fair few smokings as you can imagine!!  Here Pony strikes a pose for the cameras with a real nice fish.

Mitch and Russel Pyne had a father son trip away with us and got stuck into some awesome snapper and kingfish action. Mitch into a nice snapper

Tobez had his first day on the helm and put the crew of the day including Nick from Wellington, Dave from Hamilton and Alastair from Auckland onto some real nice kingfish out wide on jigs.

Some nice fish from the Par Five on this day, Alastair kicked things into gear....

Regular fisho Dave with a nice kingfish on the jig

Nick nailed his personal best kingish on his third trip with us - his feedback "the best day on Epic Adventures so far..."!

And another one about to be released

Al with one with a tag about to go back

Dave in a whole lot of trouble as something devours his kingfish.....

JM Rocket on the Stella working a treat for Nick

And Alastair with the last of an Epic day - great to have Tobes on board as well putting smiles on peoples dials!!

Mitch was all over the kingfish....

And the Tyrnos 10 and Jigwrex 100 got a workout on this monster kingfish of 19kg, Mitch is struggling to hold it up!  YeeHaa pencil jig worked for Mitch

Marcelle filled an extra spot to join the guys and his JM150 got one hell of a workout during the day.   The thumbs were pretty sore as well, there was a fair bit of thumbing down on the Saltiga 20!  Great thing about the 150 is you can fight the fish from under the arm easy enough....

The jig was a Jigging Master Rocket in pink

Marcelle's rod getting put to the test again....

And another fat Aldermen Island kingfish!

Mitch slayed another

Marcelle was into them every drift...the light rod putting plenty of action into the jig....

And again, rod bucket being used now, the arms getting a bit sore......

Tag into another fish

What skippers love to see - plenty of bait and kingis to boot, schooled up nice and high on the ledge

Another one on the tag board about to go back in the drink

The Action Import jigs were working too,  Russel with one

Marcelle was on fire, another on the 150....

Russel with one destined to head back to Christchurch to feed the troops

Marcelle with another fish tagged and ready to go back in the drink

"Last drift" was the call, Marcelle didn't waste any time getting his rocket into the action

What a way to finish the day, a fat 19kg fish about to be released - what a day on the light jig rods!!!

Another day & more mayhem! Matt Bruorton from Australia sticking it to a nice fish on the JM300 and Saltiga Z40

What a way to start the day for Matt, first ever New Zealand kingfish and a monster to boot!

Steve Parkinson runs a couple of game boats in Grenada and joined us for a days fishing.  He was enjoying someone else driving for a change and here hooked into his first NZ kingi!

A nice fish that was destined for the rellies dinner table back in Auckland

Local Tairua lad Shaun Cawley came out with us to catch his first ever kingfish!  A mako had other plans, scoffed his jig and lept about 15 times before we caught it on camera.....

An exicting way for Shaun to start the day...Mako about to be tagged and released

Mike Bruorton wasn't going to let Matt outdo him, here he is with the JM350 loaded up and sticking it to his first NZ kingfish, Purple Broken Arrow jig doing the trick

A nice fish which went back into the ocean with a tag in its back

Double hook up!  Matt is on....

So is Shaun on our Jigstar 350

Shaun lived his dream of catching his first kingfish and at 12 years old, a 17kg fish is not a bad way to start!!  This was an epic half an hour battle for Shaun and he did real well getting it to the boat

Matt loaded up again

Another nice fish about to be released

Another double....

Steve with another NZ kingi

And Mike bagged another on a Duel jig

With Tobes doing a couple of days a week on the boat now, Dad can start skilling Bells and Oscar up as wharf rats.  They're getting some good jack mackeral for our snapper baits!!

Pearler weather in Tairua at the moment too....and the place to yourself...
