Autumn 2011 Newsletter

Hi All!

It's been an epic summer season for us at Epic Adventures. What a blast....the reels were singing, the marlin went nuts, the kingfish were big, fat and plentiful, and the snapper sweet as. We had an amazing run of weather, warm water, good currents and baitfish bringing with it some amazing pelagic action. To top off a crazy time of year we launched the brand spanking new custom built Senator.

Most importantly we saw some big smiles on peoples dials, produced plenty of sore arms, dialed up some good times and had some fun on the water.  We lost count of the people who ticked off their bucket list to catch their first decent kingi, or came away with a new personal best.  That's what it's all about.  Thanks to everyone who came out and made it happen!

In this newsletter we reflect on an awesome season and look at what is in store for the rest of the year. Grab a drink and enjoy the read!

Cheers...Carl, Tobes and Belinda

"Railed As" on Big Kingfish!

What a summer season we had on the kingfish!  One week in particular sticks out and that is the first week in February.  BFW - Big Fish Week we dubbed it.

Every crew got a big talk on the trip out about how they needed to be mentally ready for what lay in store!  The fish were big and fought hard out.  Many newbie kingfishermen found themselves tangling with fish in the 20-30kg bracket!  Mind blowing stuff.

The very first trip on the new boat saw two kingfish nudging 30k weighed back at the clubrooms.  The next day we had one that topped 30kg.

Tobes had a crew on Sanity on the first weekend of March that will never forget what they experienced with a solid line of BIG fish right through a hot afternoon bite.

The chicks have been amongst the action too, Hayley Bonnici took out the Tairua Ladies Comp with us on Epic with a solid 23.5kg fish.

Well done to all those that knocked off a new personal best or trophy fish.

What we are seeing so far this year indicates 2011 should really be something special on the kingfish front.  So best you come and get railed, check our calendar and book a date with a big fish here

Marlin Season 2011 Goes Off!

You don't really understand it until you've seen that first marlin come in all lit up, smash a lure and take off for the horizon while a reel protests at full noise - they are just choice fish to hook and catch!!!  By the boat they are the most challenging fish to handle, it can all go pear shaped very quick.  Sometimes they can be frustrating things to catch but when its on - its all on!

Ants who deckied with us in the Nationals summed things up perfectly after a crazy second day where we went 5-3-1 (that is raised-hooked-landed) on the marlin in one morning

"Marlin are the ultimate technical fish.  Every single thing has to be perfect, from how the lure swims, to how the gear is rigged, what speed the boat is trolled out, how the fish is played, and ultimately how you handle it by the boat."

That might be Ants trying to subtely suggest we'd f****d up a couple of times that morning! Still, it was one we won't forget and we bagged a first for Mick!

We spend the large majority of the year targeting kingfish (and still love it!) so it is a nice challenge over summer to try and get a few marlin boatside during the brief window they are here in good numbers.  Seeing someone bag their first ever marlin is just something else!  It is one hell of a team sport as well, everyone has to chip in, and there have been several times this year where a complete newbie has had to stick their first tag shot or gaff shot into a marlin.

Our first for the season came on the old Stabi just before she was retired at the tail end of January. The Bonze Apache hooking our first for the season just two hours into our first dedicated marlin trip for the year, a first for Scot Phil Geddes, helped by regular Skirmantas, our first marlin for the season.  It was nice to get one last one on the old girl!

The next week a crew on Sanity got a hell of a surprise when a stripey nabbed a live mackeral set for a kingfish and Tobes and Lee together with their crew managed to bag Sanity's first marlin.  It doesn't get much better than playing a hard fighting fish like this on jigging gear, and the Stella 20000SW and JM400 was well up to the task.  Marlin are a physically tough fish for the angler to tackle on conventional gear let alone for over an hour on jigging gear with 15kgs of drag and no harness!  Once again a great team effort!  Great to know that the Duel 120lb fluoro carbon is up to being near a marlin bill for that period of time!

Tobes and Leanne put together a great vid of the capture which you can check out on our Facebook page here

Then the new Senator arrived and proved she really can raise marlin big time, the new 250HP Yammie on the back seems to put out all the right noises and the wake behind the Senator is perfect for trolling with lots of clear water for the lures to run. The new outriggers from Ocean Blue Bases have a super crisp release.

But ultimately the magic weapon was the Bonze Apache. We caught seven marlin on it this season, the last five came from about 6 hours total trolling, mainly quick bursts before or after kingi fishing - an absolute weapon!  Just goes to show what can happen when you find a bite sized lure that really works well on your boat.

Rigged with 200lb Berkley fluorocarbon leader and a 9/0 Mustad closed gape hook every hit has resulted in a solid hook up.

There were plenty of marlin moments I will remember for a long time.

The sweetest was the last morning of the Nationals.  We'd had a couple of frustrating days prior where we couldn't buy a bite.  The last morning though George, Mick and myself went out amped to the max we were going to catch a couple.  We hadn't gone thirty minutes before we got pack attacked and Mick was into his second of the week. As I was backing down on the fish another lit up marlin came charging into the Yamaha to see what was going on, I nearly ran it over!  With one in the boot the words were something like "right George, lets get you a Blue" knock me dead if we didn't have a Blue on within 10 minutes......crazy stuff.

We set the lures on the way to the kingi grounds the next day and birthday boy Mike was into a marlin on 15kg less than five minutes into trolling, a hungry stripey nailing the Apache lure again before we had the whole lure pattern set, new deckie Gus getting his first ever gaff shot into a marlin.

The toughest fight we had around the boat was Garry Johns first ever marlin.  It really dug in and several times we had it on the leader dancing right around the boat - it was just an awesome spectacle and the boys went away buzzing.  It finished an awesome trifecta for Gazza as he nailed some big kings and finished up with an 8kg+ snapper to boot.

Reflecting on the season, not only was it a buzz to see guys get their first marlin, I learnt a hell of a lot, and went away rapt with how the new boat performs gamefishing.

Now we just need to spend a bit more time chasing them next year....let us know if you're up for the challenge!  Both boats are all set to play havoc with the marlin in 2012!

New Senator Launched

In February we launched our new custom built Senator RH750.  She has already done close to 5000 nautical miles and 500 hours. As you can see above she's already accounted for a fair few marlin not to mention literally hundreds of kingfish. That's given us plenty of time to suss out whether she's as good as we hoped she would be....and its all good!

Spending 250 days on the water in a boat you have plenty of time to think about what would make things more comfortable and a better sportfishing experience for everyone on board.  When we set about replacing our Stabi we had a long wishlist of things that we needed in her replacement. Top of the list was a better ride!! The new Senator RH750 is a phenomenal ride and without having to ask people what they think of her everyone starts commenting on the way out to the grounds on a snotty day about what a soft ride it has for an alloy boat.

The boat is very much customised to how we wanted it laid out and built.  We have comfortable seating for five anglers.  Livebait tanks take up the entire transom, and having two or three livebaits all rigged and ready to go in seperate tanks without tangling each other is a dream!

The forward casting platform is just awesome to softbait or stickbait from and the boarding ladder on the bow is a dream more for the crew first thing in the morning or late in the day, but will equally be great for beach drop offs.  There are plenty of rod storage options from the rocket launcher to cabin storage and rod holders galore.

We're rapt with the choice in electronics!  The Furuno Navnet has been a dream to switch over to and has been producing the goods. Features like the SST colour changes on the trackline have made a huge difference to gamefishing. The 1kW transducer has been a revelation to me, in not only fish finding and telling the difference in fish and their size, but spotting those little bits of foul that really didn't look that prominent before.  Fair to say I've run over a few spots in the last few weeks that will be getting some more attention.

If you haven't been out in her yet....you know what to do!  Get yourself out on a trip with us.  You can also check her out at the Auckland Boat Show. We will have her on the Senator/Rollos stand at the show.  Come say gidday and check her out!

Chicks Nailing the Kingfish!!

I've seen many a grown man get smashed over by monster kings, so some of the fish below I thought were well worthy of a mention in this newsletter.

Liz and Jules in particular had their jig rods back out in a flash and slayed one after the other.....

Top Water Kings

The coastal shallow water fishing is starting to fire, with a lot of the smaller fish that have been along the coast moving out and the big boys in residence.  The other day in the shallows we had fish pushing the 20kg mark and plenty of fish in the late teens smashing stickbaits. Out wide most fish are down deeper but from August onwards they will start coming up in the water column, especially around the full moon.  If you haven't had a decent crack at stickbaiting yet, come and give it a bash, it doesn't get much better than watching a pack of big kings tail your lure then BOOOM....

Summer Snaps!!

Summer has been kind on the snapper front with plenty of nice full sized fish lurking around.  Livies and fresh dead baits fished out in the deep have accounted for plenty and we're lovin the new 4" Jigging Grubs from Berkley Gulp which are working a real treat in the shallows.  Anyway...here's a few of the better ones....

Jigs - Whats Working?

The jigging has really fired up over the last month.  Old favourites like the JM Rocket continue to produce those quality 20kg plus fish....

To get a good continuous bite through the day, mixing it up with new styles of jigs has been where its at. Every time we get anglers coming from places like Singapore with a new jig, especially if it is a good one, we see them doing very, very well.  A good example of this was a black/grey spike jig similar to the River 2 Sea spikes we use a lot, but a variation to the colours available here.  John from Singapore just slayed them over the first day of their trip on this jig.  Time to track down a few more of these.....

Orange jigs produced an awesome day of jigging for the Melbourne lads....

Interesting ReCapture

We've had a few recpatures of tagged fish lately, these have mainly been fish we've tagged during hot bites that have returned to the pins, or moved slightly up and down the coast. A very interesting recapture was reported recently though, a kingfish we tagged and released at the Aldermen Pins was recaught at the Volkner Rocks near White Island aboard Rick Pollock's Pursuit, close to 100 miles away.  Just goes to show how mobile these fish are..!

Introducing Decki Lee

Some of you might have already had the pleasure of meeting Lee aboard Sanity so this is a bit of a belated introduction! Leanne Tasman-Jones is well known in NZ fishing circles. She works actively with the New Zealand Sport Fishing council to help promote the sport as well as being part of the team behind NZ's most popular fishing website fishing.net.nz she has written many reports and most notably her epic encounter with a monster Bluefin tuna in the South Island. She has fished extensively through the pacific islands with records for both Wahoo (some might know her as Wahoo Woman) and Sailfish in Tonga. Leanne aims to have her own charter boat in the future and is building up her seatime aboard Sanity.  We're stoked to have Lee in the Epic team.

Kingfish for Christchurch

Also doing some decking for us lately is Gus Anning. He's a bit of a good luck charm, his first trip we had a marlin on within 5 minutes, the next we had a blinder on the kings. A good Northland boy and super keen fisho, Gus has has been spending some time on deck getting up to speed with how we fish out of Tairua. For the last few years Gus has has been guiding tours to Antarctica and the North Sea for Heritage Expeditions and has plenty of tales from some epic ocean passages. After a few days decking for us Gus got called down to Christchurch after the earthquake.  With Heritage's ship based in Christchurch he got called down there to oversee their ships annual maintenance programme while their staff coped with the earthquake crisis. He called me while I was at sea "Carl get me as many kingfish as you can, I'm going to smoke them up and take them down to Lyttleton to give to the locals down there who've been hit by the quake"  A few of our overseas clients donated their kingis to the cause and Gus spent a few days smoking the kingfish up and loaded as much as he could to take to take down with him. A whole day was spent on the street in Lyttleton giving away smoked kingfish to some very appreciative locals - on ya Gus!
