Fishing with the Firefighters - 12 August 2010

Report from Capt Tobes

It was one of those really really bloody cold mornings in Tairua, the fog was rolling down the valley making things rather chilly - little did i know that the chill was soon to be from something rather quiet special rather than the cold. I had bunch of hardy firemen from the Greerton staion in Tauranga.

As we headed out over a very flat bar and off to the bait grounds, the gannets were diving indicating the bait was up and getting chased..booya!..the chills set in. A couple of baits in the tank and the little Curado 200 started squeeling - braid gone!...oh crap just as well theres 100m mono backing - chasing the fish down at 10knts Bryan was winding his little arms off! - to funny...soon enough we were ontop of the fish and the too and fro started - 25 mins later the fish started wagging its tail indicating he was tired and we were ontop of things...much to our surprise up popped a 18kg specimen tail hooked. Its got to be said that the sabikis i use are just the tops, hand made and with very very strong hooks. I have caugh over 20 fish on these rigs and never had a hook break.

Next up it was 'shadow guys' turn and he wasnt so into all this charging around the ocean and opted for the 37kg rip your arms off rig, PE5 on Kojac 350 - a 10-12kg fish gobbled the livie in minutes and soon he was railed in the 10m of water...

Dave continued vigilantly with the bait catching and was rewarded with a king to 15kg on one of those sabiki's, again!...too much mate..

Byran was given one in the sabikis by his mates - so i snuk him a new commer rod, the Ocean Pro PE6, the JM PE5 and my fave jig, JM250 rocket in blue and a bit of lazy jigging he was railed!!..to much fun, line going under boat and everything as going belly up. by now the crew were well and truly onto the procedure and i was chasing down this beast at a solid 15knts to get ontop of it. No drama for the Ocean Pro and up popped the 22kg fish - mammoth effort in 12m of water.

We had a bad forecast and with only a handful of livies in the tank we shot out to the pins to have a go there - the boys were allready raving and the beers started flowing. It was hard going, the wind was not there and the glassy calm conditons ment a effortless ride out to the pins. Live baits down and, well whaddya know! 'sore guy' was gettin smoked hard on the tuff tackle - poor guy was feeling what its like to be burnt on a hoodlum. Preserverence paid off in spades. 25kg plus of fat fat Aldi kings

this started a procession for the late morning bite with another 2 fish over 22kg taken and many in the 15-18kg range - the boys were just rapt.

Tony X with a solid king - tagged for another day

a nice triple, camera diddnt get the other side of the boat - the 'broomstick' getting a work out - a bit of the old jigging shuffle around the boat and the lads nailed the triple with nice fish

'Fire guy' with a nice one, tagged and ready to go back

And well..the look on 'sore guys' face says it all really...he was beaten, bashed and bruised...
