Kingfish caught jigging and snapper caught softbaiting on Epic Adventures

1 Oct - 12 Oct 2009

We've had some pretty consistent fishing over the last two weeks.  After the run of 20-30kg fish in Sept, the kingis have been predominantly between 10 - 20kg over the last two weeks.  Working and moving between reefs has been the key to getting a line of fish through the day.

Brendon brought his father in law and mates out first up and got into some nice fish, Brendon hooked up on the Stella and luvin it!!

Nice fat fish to start the day off, Broken Arrow 400gm

Another nice kingfish, the lads kept the first couple and everything else was put back in the drink

The father in law from Oz, with another nice kingi about to be released

And pretty happy with the next one!!

And the last one for the day before we went hunting for some snapper to round the day off

One of a few nice snapper caught on 7" Gulp baits, Pink Shines

Mike, Hayley and Pete came back from Sydney to tustle with some more New Zealand kingis, armed with a few new Jigging Master rods and Stellas as well!!!  Hayley muscling a kingi on the JM200 - awesome!!

Hayley with her first kingi of the trip

Mike releasing a nice jig caught kingfish boatside

And pretty happy with a very nice kingi about to be released before a photo

Hayley getting stuck into a bigger kingfish

And a beaut kingi of 19kgs caught on the YeeHaa penciul jig (brought on their last NZ trip!), nice fat fish about to be released, nice fish on 200 weight rod

Pete's Trinidad getting a workout

Another nice fat kingfish about 16kg about to go back

Mike sticking it to one on the JM

Or is that the kingi sticking it to Mike...

Winning...

And a sweet kingi again on the lighter JM

Conditions cutting up a bit....this is in close to the coast behind Slipper Island, Mike hooked up to one on a Sluggo

Nice sized inshore fish on a plastic (fished above a jig on thee way swivel), when it looks this rough in the photo, it is :-)

Hayleys own "Snappy Stick" picking up a few nice snapper in the lee of Slipper Island

Slightly nicer conditions and Nigel Arkell from Roger's Boat Shop with a very nice kingfish on his new Kilwell 300 Jig rod and Accurate reel.

Alastair with another nice king taken on our JM300 and Ocea Jigger.  Dark green Broken Arrow jig working a treat here

Al letting one go boatside

Roger Arkell "Hellloooo, enquiry" loaded up on his JM300 and Tiagra reel

Roger with one for the smoker

Alastair with a nice kingfish on the Purple Curved Slider jig, being released boatside

'

Another day and we waded through about 20 snakes to land 15kg's of tasty jig caught hapuka!!

Same day and we escaped a bit further on away from the snakes and Skirmantas sticks it to a nice kingi on his JigWrex and Stella

Landing a couple of very nice Tairua kingfish

This one on our Stella and Smiths rod

Alicia tops of her great day with a very nice kingi on our Saragosa 8000

Father and son Adrian and Joel had never caught a kingi before their trip with us over the weekend, or been jigging.  Adrian hooked up to the first "what have I got here?"  Stella howling and carnage unfolding!!

'

Pretty stoked with the first one!

'

Joel loving the Jigging Master rod and Ocea dialled up on a nice kingfish

Joel's first ever kingi! "My first one - it is going back that is all there is to it!" Turned out to be good karma for Joel too!!!

Adrian with a bigger king about 17kg on the YeeHaa centre weighted jig, in chartreuse

Joel with a bigger one

Adrian with one taken on a Broken Arrow 300 Blue

Next drop and a PIG of a kingfish of 20kg

Joel with another nice fish on the OJ and JM, about to be released

And another....

Time for some softbaiting to wrap up their Tairua trip, a nice tasty JD on the Nuclear Chicken GULP 7" softbait

And this is what Joel came to Tairua for!!!  A big lunker of a snapper that hit the same softbait next drop!! Jig Star swivel head and Mustad worm hook.

Our YeeHaa custom stick with Saragosa 8000 reel has been getting a nice workout lately.  Kerry Wilson here hooked up to a nice kingfish

Nice solid kingfish of 18kg no problem for this sweet little rig

And another fish that hit the same rig earlier on, this one about 16kg

And Kerry's brother Tony with one of a couple of nice kingis he got on the JigWrex 100 and Tyrnos 10 same trip

All in all a good couple of weeks here in Tairua, with hapuka, back to back kingis, some lunker snapper, and a few tasty surprises along the way!!
