Epic Adventures - Dirty Old Bait Day!
Photos and report from an epic day of fishing action out at the Aldermen Islands, Tairua,
Coromandel Peninsula 23 Oct 2009
Marcus Dean and Devlin Hill joined us in Tairua in the wee small hours of the morning, and we headed out to stock the livey tank. Our quest today was to catch a kingfish on 3kg line, one of Marcus' specialties is light tackle and he has had his eye on his club record. Devlin joined him, armed with an array of heavier mono but still some light tackle as well.
We started off with a few small kings on livebaits, Devlin hooked up on 37kg mono

And a nice warm up size kingfish was released

Next bait down got hammered again

Devlin kept this one for smoking, everything else was going back

A nice snapper hammered the next bait

Marcus was hooked up to a monster snapper at the same time on 3kg, ended in tears with the mainline breaking, doin the hard yards on 3kg but worth it

Devlin cracks into a bigger snap, 18 pound!

Another king bout to be released, hooked in the corner of the mouth

Another cracker of a snapper about 22 pound

We'd worked hard at it all day dropping baits down to individual kingis we could see swimming on the sounder, eventually it paid dividends on some sign we'd marked earlier in the wee. Devlin pulled out his 15kg mono set and threw out a pillie, at the very end of our dirft Devlins pillie was engulfed as he wound it in to the boat and his Shimano Speedmaster was soon screaming!! The Stabi backing up into the seas as the kingi heads for the reef, looked like a real good fish

Close to an hour later a horse of a fish made it to the boat!!!

Weighed in back in Tairua at 35.65 kg's - on 15kg mono a likely pinfish for Devlin's club!

Cheers Devlin and Marcus, good fun having you fish the light stuff with us, and hopefully we will see Marcus back for some more fun on 3kg!!
