January Fishing Diary - January 6 - January 15

The kings have well and truly spread out now, and we're covering some ground each day to ensure we get fish right through the day.  Most of the fish you see below have been caught on livebaits, Jan and Feb being a season where we livebait a lot of the time.  Back to using a lot of burley, early starts to catch livebait and covering some ground during the day to find where the kings are cruising.  There is still a long line of nice fish below from the last weeks action, with the biggest going around 28kg.

Chris Blake from Tassie snuck one day of fishing into his holiday and came away with some nice kings and albies, this was his best of the day, on a livie

Chris and a regular, Sam Stringfield, both hooked up on Stella 2000 and JM 400 rods and Jigging Master jigs

NIce solid fish for Sam!

Adrian Nancekivell with a real solid king caught on a livebait in sweet conditions out from Tairua

Fred Romeo hooked here into a nice kingi on our Tica Magnum livebait rod

And a nice king of about 18kg after a great tustle

Another nice fish for Fred on the jig

Fred hooked up again on a livebait this time

And a solid 20kg king this time about to be released.

Fred caught a long line of fish on his trip over from Sydney and he was adamant all of them were released.  Stuff mate!

Bryan and Karen Hackett slotted some fishing in on their campervan trip through NZ.  Karen came on board buzzing about her skydive the day before over the Coromandel coast, but when she hooked in to this solid beast of a fish she didn't know what hit her - the verdict - way more of a buzz than her skydive!!!!!  Caught on our JM 350 and Talica 12ii which has knocked over some big fish this week - could versatile reel for both jigging and livebaiting!

Bryan wasn't to be outdone and proceeded to hook a monster of a fish, here is 28kg's of kingfish, weighed on the boat scales and about to be released.

Bryan into another one right on the coast

And a smaller version fit for dinner.

Same day and another solid kingi caught close to shore on a livie

Alex Hitchcock loaded up on a big kingi on the Smith and Stella 20000 FA

Nice fish about 17kg

The jigs fired today and produced some big kings

After livebaits producing the line share of the fish, they wouldn't touch the livies and were smashing the jigs hard!!  Another cracker of a fish...!!  Pink spear.

Holding on for dear life as another kingi smashes a JM rocket

Another Aldies king about to be released

A sweet jigging action for this first time jigger produced a great line of fish through the day

Steve Bailey from the UK with a nice JD for dinner, after dealing to some nice kings in the shallows to 12kg, on a day where a howling offshore wind kept us tucked in just off the Tairua beach.

Andrew Hill and the boys took a break from the dairy farm to get stuck into some nice Aldies kings.  We loaded up with livies and they produced a great line of fish during the day

Four kingis kept for the smoker, a fair few released too

Matt was dominated the action to begin with!

Andrew sticking it to one on one of the livie rods

And one about to go back

Sally Gamble had never caught a kingi before, it was her birthday and she was out with her husband Jim, who had the boat booked for his 60th birthday as well.  Sally's livie got hammered on a double strike, we released Jim's fish and went off chasing this brute who was half way to Chile by that time!!  What a monster of a fish for a wee lady!!  Caught on our Talica 12ii and weighed at 25kg.

A spot of puka fishing later in the day with some nice tasty pups hitting the livies

And the great run of weather continues, we now have a bit of easterly swell coming through and this will push the tuna in close, a nice yellowfin was caught wide today about 50kg's, so for the next month we'll be mixing up a bit of kingi fishing with hunting down the gamefish.   Couple more photos from the primo conditions yesterday....
