Epic Winter Fishing - July 2011

Report from Carl

After a very mild May and June it was almost as if winter wasn't going to turn up. Well it did!  With a vengeance! July has seen some atrocious weather to put it mildly, including a two week long blowout, stuck ashore.  Never mind, cos when we've got out the fishing has been off the richter!

Coromandel is famous for its big winter kingfish and those getting out on charters lately have being seeing why, with some epic hard pulling freight trains hitting most drops. Livies have been where its at as these fish are scoffing down putting on some serious weight for winter.

Kyle and the boys were out for their first ever kingi fix and struck a hot bite, on a very cold breezy, sloppy day!  Boom, first fish went 20

Kyle stoked with his first king

Plenty more came through the morning, but this took two thumbs, drag at sunset and the boat chasing to stop it.  one 28 kegs of Alderman Island kingfish

After a big spell on land with the weather it looked like we'd get five days straight for a change - choice!  Out with the jigs and we're in

Double on jigs

Double on jigs

Phil Marlow and wife Jules came out for their first kingi hunt, it took a while but finally we found a good patch of bait and the tanks got filled up and we were off to the Aldermen Pins.  There was a big patch of kingfish and the fishing was cranking!  Phil was railed on the first

Jules was getting railed next up on the MC Works Southern Blue 516, a choice kingi weapon

Jules stoked with her fat fish

Another kingi cherry popped

Jules with one on the 3 kings and PE5

Calm seas, light winds and fat kings biting hard what more can a keen angler ask for!

Choice one Jules!

Double time!

One more to wrap the day up

Our decky Tony Carpenter snuck out in his own boat to get himself one, this one a beast of a 29kg fish weighed back at the club, just shy of 30 kegs aye Tony!

Next day Tim Williams and his Dad Paul had us chartered themselves, Tim was back home for good after 12 years in Tokyo and itching for an epic adventure chasing some hard fighting kiwi fish.  This one got his arms warmed up

Paul with a warm up sized one

This one stretched them a little more

Dad shows us how its done with a beast of a fish on the Powerspell 300 and PE5, est 27kg

Not to be outdone Tim snagged a beast of a fish on the MC Works 516 - lucky red it was now dubbed. PE7 to sunset and Tim was getting peeled, thanks to a few boats who got out of our way in a hurry as we charged back on him, we had a beast of a fish boatside, this one gotta be round the 30k mark

The next morning Tim and Paul were joined by Geoff and some nice kings were a welcome suprise on the bait grounds in the morning

This fat fish put up a hell of a fight in 10m of water

Paul dealt to one as well, with everyone getting some inshore action it was time to go find the freight trains out wide again

Lucky red in action again

Boom, Tim with another mid 20's kingfish

Geoff was getting his dose of arm stretchings Tairua style

This one his fish of the day

One last one for Tim on lucky red!

See ya in marlin season Tim!

Next up was Justin Dufty and some of his building colleagues from the Mount.  Some of my first fishing experiences were catching eels with Justin in the Kaueranga river as kids, so it was classic to get Justin out and see him get railed on some frieght trains.  We started the ball rolling at the Par Five and Justin got the first nice fish

After plenty on jigs at the Par Five we snuck back to the supermarket in search of a horse and pretty soon lucky red was doubled over line peeling off the PE7, BOOM we had another horse

Plenty more nice kings today as well

And fittingly lucky red dealt to the last horse of the week, tagged and returned for someone else to catch another day, nice kingfish for Bran!
