New Zealand Fishing Trip - Sept 2009
All fish caught from Tairua and Whitianga, Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, 4 days of fishing charters with Epic Adventures!
Colin, Vincent, Blake and Danny joined us in Tairua on Sunday just as we were weighing in the 35.4 kg kingfish from that day. They got the feeling there might be some sore arms ahead!!!
They weren't dissapointed, first drift and Danny hooks into his first ever NZ kingfish!!

A nice way to warm into things with a kingi around 12kg! Fish released to fight another day!

Blake was in next, testing his new rod out to the max!

And pretty rapt with a prime New Zealand fishing around 14kg before being released

Colin was in next, his new Avet singing on a nice kingi

And another kingi about to get put back, this one about 15kg

Blake into one on our Stella and Smiths rod

A nice wee fighter

The sweat is starting to pour off now!! The arms starting to hurt....

Coling battles one on the Stella

Another nice fish

Danny hooked what we thought was a monster king, but it ended up being a foul hooked fish in the 20-25kg range. Just as it came into sight it was monstered by a 3m Bronze Whaler - a huge shark as you can see from the mouth that too the bite.....!!! Ah well we had some sashimi for dinner.....

On the way back in to Whitianga, some seals relaxing after lunch at Ohinau Island!!!

That night we tucked into some fresh kingi shashimi and some BBQ kingfish crumbed in Cathedral Cove Macadamias - doesn't get much better
Day Two, and Vincent tackles a solid kingi on the JM300

A sweet kingi for Vincent, his first New Zealand kingfish

Blake was into a monster next up, drag cranked to full on the OJ and JM bent in half, orange 400gm Broken Arrow!!

And he did real well, this is a monster kingfish which we released and we put it at around the 28kg - 30kg mark.

No, Blake wasn't overly excited, this was the kingfish blowing his load!!! Good to put the spawning fish back for the next generation!!!

Blake was on fire, into another one, someone was getting the jigging buzz!!!

One of plenty we released boatside

Denny with a nice fish day two

Colin praying for the line to stop peeling!!!

Blake lays into another on the Smiths, choice!

Released without a photo, meanwhile Danny was in again

Another cracker for that man!

Colin lays into one on the OJ and JM300

Pretty stoked with another nice fish

That wrapped up day two, we got some snapper on scallops on our way home at the Mercury Islands for a sensational dinner back at home, sashimi, fish cakes, fresh snapper and fresh scallops - OK it does get better!!!
Day three and Vincent gets us off the mark with a beauty fish!!!

Danny with a serious bend in his rod, OJ dialled to the max!!

And the second monster of the trip!!! This one again, late 20's pushing 30kg, long fish in very good condition

Blake with a nice fish about to be put back

Before laying into another on our Smiths, I think this man will be found scouring Singapore's tackle shops on return, Blake will be dreaming about bent jig rods!!!

Quick photo before release boatside

The arms were getting a bite tired by this stage, time for some snapper snooping, a bit of berley big slab of straylined snapper and whammo, Colin with a nice conditioned kelpie snapper

The kahawai on on the action as well

Vincent in his element with some good old fashioned bait fishing!!

Day four, our final day of fishing and there was some discussion about just going bait fishing for the day, then there was that glimmer in everyone's eyes "Oh, lets have a couple of hours jigging first"..........

We mixed up some softbait fishing and jigging at "The Supermarket" Camo grubs working well

All the boys getting a taste of snapper NZ style

The kingi's hitting hard, the boys getting their jigging fix!!!

We had been going OK without too many breakages, then Blake hooks into a kingi and one too many big fish for the trip and his Surecatch rod brought over from Singapore decides to give in......."keep going" was the call and he does reel well!!!

And lands a 25kg kingfish on half a rod!!!

Those Camo grubs were going off!!

Colon has his last taste of NZ kingi jigging!!

And a quick jig at Jimmys Reef on the way back in produced a nice snapper on the Broken Arrow!!
