Epic Adventures Tairua, Coromandel NZ Fishing Charter Report Sept 10 2009

The weekend saw a huge swell pumping in to Tairua so we spent the a couple of days mooching around Great Mercury Island, out of Whitianga.

A big lunker snapper that hit a Sardine Pogy Gulp softbait drifted to the bottom, nice getting a chance to have a fish myself on a rare occasion - line peeling, sun shining......wooohoooooo!!!

Another nice Mercury Island snapper on a big chunk of bonito bait, 10kg mono, chur

Another one on the same Sardine Pogy bait

Anthony Honeybone, who fished with us for a week early in the year was up for the annual Tairua Pauanui sportfishing club prizegiving, he was up for quite a few prizes so came up for a few days for the prizegiving.  He got the New Zealand Big Game Fishing Trophy for most tagged game fish on the year, the Tairua trophy for biggest fish on lightest line, Epic Adventures got top Tairua boat on points for the year, and there were plenty of other certificates, plaques and trophies on the Epic table at the end of the night...a few bourbons were had to celebrate...

He got to wet a line too .....Ants with a nice fish on bonito

And a few more primo snapper caught straylining

Ants looking really happy about being the designated diver for the day after prizegiving, collecting some tasty scallops

The Mercs are always a real special place to get to, and we try and fish up there for a day or two on all our week long trips.  You never know what you will come across, like these Orca who came and said gidday

Once the swell died down it was back into the kingis - this is what jigging is all about - the pic sums it up, Ray being taken to the rail on Stella 8000 and Smiths spinning rod - AWESOME!!!!  YeeHaa silver pencil jig

The result - close to 19kg of prime Alderman Island kingfish - check the grimace!!

Now some people are just downright FISHY - we had four guys on board, Ray picks up another rod and hello, he is in to the next one - this time on our YeeHaa custom Kilwell blank, Saragosa 8000, Kilwell Broken Arrow blue jig

And Ray lands another great Tairua kingfish after a monumental tustle!!!

And then....while everyone else struggled to catch a kingi, Ray picks up out Stella 2000, and whammo......another awesome kingfish.....check the smile!!!

And just to prove he can do it on all the rods, he picks up the OJ and JM300 and whadya know....

The conditions were pretty terrible :-)

Even the trevally were hitting the jigs

And a bit further in the snapper were liking the Catch softbaits

JP from YeeHaa cranked his softbait in as we were about to move spots and a kingfish liked the look of it - rod bent to the max!!!!

Half and hour later he was down to the backing and hoping all was going to hold!!

And after an hour long fight he landed a 17kg kingfish - New Penny grub tail Gulp bait, one awesome fish on 8pd braid!!!!!

And to finish the day off we got to cast one softbait after another into this school of fish for some tasty kahawai for the smoker

Noel Edwards and crew were out the next day and the kings were a bit cagey on the bite, but we still turned up some fish

Once again, the fortune was favouring a particular angler and their own style turning up fish on the day

This one fell to the Stella and that jig again - the YeeHaa pencil
