Jarred Christie with a HUGE kingi that pulled the scales at the Tairua Pauanui sportfishing club down to the mythical 30.00kg mark!!!

This massive kingi took a KV jig in orange and yellow - a jig that often turns up big fish in the early 30kg range.  Jarreds fish is destined to be mounted - why wouldn't you after cracking the 30kg mark!

> Vanuatu Trip Report 1 Aug

We've just spent a week away in the tropics jigging for a few species we don't normally get to fish for on our annual Epic Adventure to Vanuatu.  A group of regular anglers joined us for this offshore adventure where we jigged for dogtooth tuna and popped for GT's with Wild Blue Fishing. Tony Huang from YeeHaa fishing tackle, one of our anglers, with a 25kg GT caught on a Yo Zuri sashimi popper. For more photos and a full report click here

> Tairua Fishing Report 24 July

Another double whammy of big kingfish and hard fighting snapper in the shallows today!

The kingi sign has been a bit patchy this week, more solo fish than big schools, but we had our anglers hooked up on a line of solid fish in the 14-17kg range today at a variety of spots around the Aldermen Islands.

Pink spear jig and Broken arrow were the best jigs on the Tairua kingfish.

Then it was time for some screaming runs on light braid, with some softbaiting in the shallows off Tairua. Gulp Lime Tiger again the hot bait.

Pictured here are two of the boys from Dixon Roofing on their Friday outing!, Shane Webster with the snapper of the day and Trinity Woolston with the kingi of the day.  The fellas did well in some challenging conditions.

Our next report will be a week away as we have a group on a plane in the morning to fish Vanuatu for a week (it is our mid year break - but no rest for the wicked we will still be guiding people on to some big fish while enjoying a week of slightly warmer weather in the tropics!).

Stay tuned for the full report on 1 August!!

> Tairua Fishing Report 22 July

There are some real nice snapper right up in the shallows along the Tairua coastline at the moment.

For the softbait enthusiast it is a good time to work the coast with softbaits.

Pictured here is Mike Cooney with a nice snapper caught yesterday on the first few casts of our second drift on the way back in from jigging for kingis at the Alderman Islands.

Mike's fish was caught on a 5" Lime Tiger, a great softbait for fishing at this time of year.

His mate Willie caught this very nice kingfish earlier in the day, on a Red Pencil jig, a great tustle on our JigWrex 100 weight rod.

> Tairua Fishing Report 17 July

The fishing action this week has built and built and finally today we had a real blinder of a day.

We've had good snapper and kingfish action out of Tairua all week but today took the cake.

Big kingfish over 20kg on jigs, and plenty of snapper hitting softbaits in the shallows.

Adam Oldfeild came away with the best kingfish and best snapper of the week today.  The kingfish caught on Zest Curved Slider 400gm jig, and the snapper on a Gulp Nuclear Chicken 5" Jerk Shad softbait.

Check out more photos from the last weeks action by clicking here

With great snapper and kingfish action like this, it just goes to show that the New Zealand winter is a good time of year to be out fishing, and you can expect the snapper to stay in the shallows for a while now, providing some exhilirating shallow water soft plastic fishing for a few months.

The kingfish have been off and on for the last few weeks but every day all anglers have got stuck into some good action, if you want to make sure you experience a real hot bite on the kingis, just come and fish the Coromandel for a few days and you'll end up seeing some of the best jigging action you can get.

> Fishing Report 10 July 2009

We've done a bit of everything the last few days.  An awesome straylining session at Pauanui for Whangamata holidaymakers Tash and Andy, had some great kingfish action on jigs for our guests from the USA and topped it all of with another trophy kingfish fish today as well as a mixed bag of all sorts included a very rare catch in our waters of a slender tuna on a softbait!!!!

Another big kingfish was caught at the Alderman Islands today and this one was released to live another today after a photo for the angler, Timothy Brown of Auckland.  Tim has been out jigging with us most months this year and has worked his way up to this solid 20kg kingfish - well done Tim! Check out more photos from the last three days here

> Fishing Report 7 July 2009

Todays crew the guys worked hard at the jigging and it turned up a trophy fish, tipping the scales at 23kg

Skirmatas Saltis caught this fat as kingfish on a Zest Deep Slim jig on his JigWrex 400 and Stella 20000.

The rest of the guys caught their personal best kingfish as well.   Catch more photos from the trip on this fishing charter photo page

> Fishing Report 4 July 2009

We've predominantly spent the last three days targeting Tairua kingfish with three different groups of anglers, all doing day fishing trips.  Most were anglers new to jigging and they got a good feel of what it is like to have a big New Zealand kingfish loaded up on the end of a jigging rod!  Pictured here is Tony with a personal best kingfish, caught on his own Jigging Master 400 spin rod and Stella reel.  For more photos from the last week check out our the weeks gallery here

> Fishing Report 28 June 2009

Mike, Hayley and Pete flew to fish New Zealand for three days with us. We managed to get a huge day of fishing in yesterday.  Big Tairua kingfish to 20kg all caught jigging on their extensive range of jigging gear and some nice snapper caught softbaiting with GULP.  Mike is pictured here with a typical Tairua kelpie snapper caught at the Aldermen Islands. For more photos from their trip click here

> Fishing Report 26 June 2009

Father and son Jonathan Hare and Riley Hare had a fantastic day with us yesterday! Regular Tairua holiday makers at their waterfront bach they had a day out on Epic Adventures to learn more about jigging for kingfish.

10 year old Riley accounted for a big kingfish first up, then is was more big kingis, terakihi and snapper, coupled with perfect glassy conditions.

It made for a great couple of days fishing here in Tairua, the Alderman Islands, Castle Rock and the Mercury Islands, we covered some miles and ended up with a non stop run of fish, good kingis and table fish too. Check out more photos from the last two days here

> Fishing Report 23 June 2009

Superb fishing for Tairua kingfish this week.  Best jigs were Jigging Master Alien jigs in Pink, Blue Katch1 spear and Kilwell Broken Arrow - three of the hundred or so different jigs we have available on our fishing charters.  Keep changing the jigs and keep catching the fish! Pictured here is John Pellew, jigging expert, with a nice fish caught on 23 June, for some more photos of the 100 or so fish we have caught so far this week and a full report click here

> Fishing Report 20 June 2009

It has been a great week for fishing.  There haven't been huge numbers of kingis around but the great thing about fishing our area is its consistency, even when the fishing is a little tough we still turn up some quality fish each day.

The week started with Team YeeHaa fishing with us, and Alan Le got this 20kg+ kingfish on a Broken Arrow jig, and it was released to catch again some day.  The guys got around twenty kingis, most released.

Check out this awesome video the guys put together for more action or our photo gallery from more trips over the last week.

Once again, some awesome fishing here in Tairua over winter, so get in touch to book a trip with us soon.

> Fishing Report 8 June 2009

It was always going to happen! It has been a little while since a really hot week long bite and the last seven days just went mental with kingfish smashing any jig we put in the water!

Non stop kingfish jigging action and no doubt Tairua is New Zealand's kingfish hot spot!  You can't beat winter fishing here in New Zealand.

Hit jigs were anything pink, or the big King jig in blue, you know they are hungry when they are hitting big jigs like this, one kingi had six big jack mackeral in him.

Pictured here are two of the bigger fish from the week both round the 20kg mark and we have another 50 or so photos in last weeks gallery here

> Fishing Report 1 June 2009

It has been a great Queens Birthday long weekend, with plenty of good fish being caught by our clients. Pictured here is Jamie Dormer with one of stacks of kingfish caught over the weekend. This fish was caught on a jig, but we mixed the weekend up with livebaits, sabikis and softbaits and the result was some very good fishing, with big trevs and john dory for dinner as well.  Check out the weekends photos in here

> Fishing Report 22 May 2009

We've had three days of awesome livebait action in the shallows!  We've been fishing a big ball of bait that the kingfish have rounded up and for two days the action has been unbelievable. All fish have been caught on live makkas and in 8m of water these kingis have put up an awesome fight on our light JigWrex 100 rod and Tyrnos 10 reel. Often the strike is within metres of the boat!

Pictured here is Anesh with an 18kg kingi caught on Tuesday ,1 of 3 kingfish for the day and also Craig with a 16kg fish, one of 4 caught on Wednesday.  Thursday a quick afternoon session netted us two 18kg Tairua kingis from a double strike in the shallows.  It was mayhem as two kingis peeled off 40m of line in opposite directions! Then Friday it was back to the Alderman Islands and 65 kingis in a day, the biggest 20kg!  What a week!!!!!

> Fishing Report Monday 18 May 2009

What a fantastic day!  Steve McKenzie and his mates from Auckland had a ball with us today in 5 knot variable winds, glassy seas and with kingis hitting jigs left right and centre!

YeeHaa pencil jigs were the hot jigs of the day on the kingfish.

We also fished Inchikoo jigs from Action Imports which resulted in this big hapuka weighing in at 20kg!  This is the first time this jig has hit the water and within seconds of it hitting the bottom it was all on!!!

There are plenty of snapper around and some great fishing for them on soft plastics. This 20 pounder was caught on a Zman plastic and Cyclops 4oz head.

> Fishing Report 7 May 2009

We've got 9 keen guys over from Sydney at the moment and they're having a ball on the kingfish and snapper.

Today the fellas cracked into well over 100 kingfish.  This 20kg fish was caught by the founder of Sydney Angler - Iain.  A great day at the office!

A few more photos from the trip can be found here

> Fishing Report 4 May 2009

The water is starting to cool down - great for the fishing! With the days getting shorter the bite times are full on and when you get them the fish go ballistic.   We had one of these today, nailing heaps of kingis in the 14-20k range, all on jigs.

The day was a test day with NZ fishing identity Boulder who runs an online tackle store, and testing out some new jigs from Action Import we were very impressed with the results - especially this tasty hapuku caught by Boulder himeself! This fish was caught on a prototype bent butt jig rods from Reel Rods, (Keiron from Reel Rods also writes for the same magazine as Carl).

Other jigs working on the day were the JM rockets and the pencil piper jigs from YeeHaa fishing tackle store in Panmure.

> Fishing Report 1 May 2009

We've been out the last two days and the fishing has been pretty good. We've had to wade through a lot of smaller kingis, probably 200 through the two days (!) but there are plenty of big fish there too and when they finally hit you know all about it! After catching plenty of smaller kings through the day, Evan O'Connor finished the day off with us by landing this 20kg beauty. There were plenty of sore arms when we got back to shore in Tairua today!

> Fishing Report 20 April 2009

We've had some epic fishing over the last week, especially over the Easter weekend.  Consistently big kingfish and plenty of them every charter, all caught on jigs and no need to take livies out.

We're putting back a lot of these fish after a photo so there are still plenty for the next person to catch.  Hot jigs over Easter were the YeeHaa pencil jigs and also Zest orange jigs in most shapes.

We're also having a great run of snapper here in Tairua, with fish in the 6-8kg range caught most days. These Coromandel snapper are fat and in really good condition, great eating!

Pictured above is Brett Edmonds who caught a primo kingfish of 20kg (the biggest that day went close to 30kg and was released) and also Cameron Beatson opposite with a similar sized fish caught on another fishing charter on Easter Monday.

> Fishing Report 2 April 2009

This week we've had Kim Lock Pang and three of his mates from Singapore with us.

They had three of some of the best three days fishing we've had ever!

Non-stop snapper on softbaits like this one pictured here.  All on 7" Gulp softbaits. We even caught a MAHIMAHI on softbait as wel!

Non stop quadruple hook ups on kingis on jigs. The biggest kingi went 27kg, pictured here.

We've loaded a photo gallery of some of the better photos from the trip here:

Kim's photo gallery!

> Fishing Report 29 March 2009

We've just had a team of four guys from Melbourne fishing with us.  The guys wanted to mix up a bit of fishing with some good seafood and some scenic stuff and we put together a very epic adventure for them!  They all got big kingis, snapper (like this one pictured here caught on a jig) and we also found some scallops for dinner as well! Check out some of Max's awesome photos from their holiday in New Zealand here

> Fishing Report 22 March 2009

Sam and Liam and their mates had a great day with us today. The conditions were a bit wild and wooly but they got stuck into some great kingis jigging on the specialised jigging rods and reels we provide for free as part of our trips.

This one caught by Liam went 20kg, all the guys caught kingis in the jigs, we kept some for some great eating and plenty went back to be caught again.

Good stuff guys.

> Fishing Report 20 March 2009

Another great day on the Tairua kingfish and puka today.  This time the puka fell to the jigs well, a Zest Hardy in green and gold.

Plenty more great kingis hitting the jigs to about 18kg.

Pictured here is Dave Andersen from Hamilton with plenty of nice chomping - a 15kg hapuka, caught between the Alderman and Castle islands.

> Fishing Report 19 March 2009

Rex was out with us today, armed with his Trinidad and Jig Wrex, a great combo for jigging and his and his team knocked off a heap of kingis on jigs out of Tairua, a few kept for the bin and more released to fight another day.   A great fish to end the day was this tasty hapuku.

This puka was caught on a whole squid bait fished on the bottom.

> Fishing Report 18 March 2009

Regulars Max and Edward brought out their mate Jimmy for a spot of jigging with us out of Tairua today. Jimmy got his first kingi on a jig and was stoked with getting pulled to the rails on a big fish, and the guys caught and released some big kingis up to 20kg.  These guys know how to jig!

We then went for a spot of puka fishing and one horse of a snapper devoured one of our Jigging Master Rocket jigs!  A nice surprise in 90m of water!

Jigging for snapper used to be very popular in New Zealand and now with the introduction of japanese style mechanical jigging we are picking up lots of good snapper on the jigs.

A favourite colour for them is orange, like this JM rocket or the Orange Zest curved slider.

> Fishing Report 11 March 2009

We've got a bunch of guys from Sydney fishing with us at the moment. Day one saw some great fishing with some solid Tairua kingis between 10 and 18kg.  Day two saw bigger kingis with plenty around 18-21kg. The guys have also nailed some lunker snapper fishing the washes at the Aldermen Islands with Gulp softbait.  Turning out to be a great fishing charter so far! Andrew Ebbet is the guys token kiwi on board and he nailed this 21kg king. Choice!

> Fishing Report 3 March 2009

Tim Brown took a few days out fishing before he got married this weekend.  He managed to knock over twenty or so nice kingis on jone of our jigging trips and had a ball jigging with our new Stellla 20000FA reel and Smiths Offshore AMJ rod. Hot jigs were the Broken Arrow 400gm and Jigging Master rocket jigs.

> Fishing Report 28 Febraury 2009

Well all up the team tagged and released 184 kingfish in the New Zealand fishing Nationals.   We took out line weight honours in 15kg, 10kg and 8kg IGFA line classes, most tagged, most points overall and most tagged by an individual angler.  Well done to Brett, Ants, Sean, Scott, James, JP and Max who fished their hearts out for seven days/  Here is Brett again with another great fish on 15kg line which took out the 15kg line division.  A full report on the Nationals is posted here

> Fishing Report 25 Febraury 2009

More great fish in the New Zealand fishing Nationals today, this time Brett Collins took out a nice snapper!  Our tag and release tally is looking pretty healthy now and we landed some nice kingis on IGFA 8kg line too.

We had snapper nailing big live trevally mid water!  What a day!

> Fishing Report 24 Febraury 2009

We're in the middle of fishing the New Zealand fishing Nationals competition which runs for seven days straight.

Our first day we tagged and released 49 kingfish between 10kg and 23kg!

Today Anthony Honebone landed a nice fish on 10kg IGFA line which went 17kg. A great effort on light line. The fish was caught on a live koheru.

> Fishing Report 16 Febraury

Max's Dad has been over from China for the last month and they've done a few days with us chasing the kingis.

This fish was caught south of the Aldermen Islands on a Zest Deep Slim jig and would have gone around 21kg.  It was released to fight another day!  Good fun on Max's Smiths 150 rod!

> Fishing Report 22 January

We've been having a ball fishing the close reefs around Tairua.  Kim Mitchell from The Cyrpus Tree restaurant took some time out from her busy summer and we put her on to three big kingis before the sun even made it up over Slipper Island!

We've had Matt Watson and the ITM fishing show with us the last two days as well and they got some great shallow water footage with us!

> Fishing Report 14 January

Simon Gooder brought his father fishing with us hoping to put him on to a nice kingfish and introduce him to jigging.

On the way out Si managed to jig this 25kg hapuku - a nice tasty suprise and it fought real hard in 60m of water.

The puka was caugtht on a green and gold spear jig - puka would have to be one of the most sought after fish on jigs and these spear jigs are lethal on these prime eating fish.

We got into some good kingfish on the jigs too and had a marlin freejumping by the boat!

All in all a great day in idyllic conditions - 21 degree water, flat seas and another still January day.

> Fishing Report 06 Jan 2009

It’s Yellowfin time!

We caught Tairua’s first yellowfin tuna of the season today.

Sean Cummings caught this 44kg yellowfin tuna with us in 200m off the Aldermen Islands.

It rounded off a perfect day with no wind, glassy seas and plenty of other fish caught during the day including plenty of kingfish on jigs.

Tairua is the hotspot of gamefishing in New Zealand at the moment with more marlin being hooked than anywhere else in New Zealand.

> Fishing Report 24 Dec 2008

The fishing is red hot at the moment, big kingfish in close and out wide, snapper biting hard on the sand and deep foul and the first official marlin and tuna have been caught this last week.

Pictured here is Mark Edwards who caught this whopping 20kg kingfish with us on his brand new Shimano JigWrex rod and Trinidad reel.

We caught a 12 kg fish earlier on in close on a livebait and then dozens of kingfish which were caught and released on jigs further out. Mark's fish was on a Katch1 green and gold spear jig.

> Fishing Report 4 Dec 2008

Today's guests from Ireland were more used to catching mackeral back home...we know something else that likes mackeral - kingfish!! They were rapt when the rod bent over on a kingi pushing 20kg.

We also caught some nice snapper to 6kg on 'MacFlasher' rigs, with half a pilchard attached to each hook.

The kingfish are starting to move in, so after a winter of jigging we'll be moving more towards livebaiting, poppers and cubing to catch kingis in the shallows over the next few months.

Keep and eye out for our article on livebaiting for kingfish in the  next Fishing Coast to Coast magazine.

There are plenty of tuna starting to show up, with skippies around 5-6kg, great fun on light tackle, as well as some good sized albacore.

We are expecting to first run of yellowfin in the next week or two, the water has warmed up to around 19 degrees around the Aldermen Islands, and they should be through any minute!

> Fishing Report 20 Nov 2008

Sharyn Maybury from Australia caught this beaut 7kg snapper with us on her third cast with a 5" Lime Tiger Gulp softbait this morning at Slipper Island.  Kevin and Sharyn have spent the week fishing with us, Kevin catching a similar sized snapper and plenty of big kingfish and also some tasty John Dory for dinner each night.  The snapper have all been caught on sand or rubbly bottom away from the reef.

> Fishing Report 19 November

Today we we Mr Sasaki fishing with us at the Aldermen Islands.  He is Shimano Japan's lure desinger and came up with the Lucanas jig concept.

He was shooting a TV show and DVD on jigging for snapper and kingfish using a number of new 'Inchikoo' jig designs. We put him on to some great snapper and kingfish in around 90m of water.

> Fishing Report 16 November

We've just got back from our week long trip to Vanuatu which we run every year.  Four anglers joined us on the trip and caught plenty of yellowfin, mahimahi, GT's and sailfish.  Blue Marlin were strangly absent but this is the first trip we haven't caught them in numbers. Yellowfin were the highlight and they usually are around in numbers in November.  This 62kg  yellowfin put up a great fight for Euan.

> Fishing Report 7 November

NZ lure maker Bonze joined us on Epic Adventures for three days.   Each day we ran a game fishing seminar with Bonze during the morning and then jigged for kingfish in the afternoon.  Bonze shared with everyone on board some of his secrets for catching marlin trolling his lures and loads of great tips for the marlin season ahead.  You can be sure most of our pattern for the coming season will be Bonze lures! Pictured here is Bonze with a nice kingi we put him on to!

> Fishing Report 7 October

Sheio Wong caught this whopping 27 kg kingfish with us at the Aldermen Islands on a Daiwa Saltiga Expedition reel and Jigging Master 450 rod, on a Katch1 pink spear jig!

We caught a hot bite with plenty of kingis coming thick and fast including this big, long fish.

Not in the best of condition and a bit skinny compared to the rest of the fish it would have topped 30kg with a good feed before hand!

> Fishing Report 1 October

Kingfish are not the only fish that like taking jigs! We've been picking up some nice hapuku while jigging for kingfish lately.

A slightly different technique is used when targeting puka at the end of a kingfish drift, and it is proving very effective!

Both the Aldermen Islands and Tairua coastline are fishing well for snapper as well.

> Fishing Report 24 Sept

We've had some stunning weather lately as spring kicks into full effect.  FInally some big highs are rolling through and we've been enjoying some great fishing for kingfish, hapuku and snapper.

Hamish Pilkington nabbed this very nice kingi last week topping 20kg and there are plenty of fish like it being caught on jigs.

> Fishing Report 20 Aug 2008

We it feels like spring is finally here.  This week we had several nice weather windows with mild conditions and flat seas.  Many fish are now roed up, both snapper and kingfish, so there will be plenty of activity with spring kicking into gear over the next few weeks.

We got into some cracking fish this week.  A couple of fish cracked the magic 25kg mark, including this fat kingfish caught by Kerren Packer which would have gone close to 30kg.

There are plenty of nice fish in the shallows at the Aldermen Islands and inshore reefs.  Camo GULPs are the hot bait.

There is plenty of marine life out there too, yesterday we had seals chasing kingis to the boat and penguins chasing softbaits right to the boat - it's all on!!

> Fishing Report 9 August 2008

The 'Puka Boys -Rikki, Mont, Jun and Neil were back in Tairua for some jigging and were rewarded with a nice Hapuku on a Zest curved slider jig in chartreuse.

The boys also got some nice kingis and snapper - all on JIGS! The Puka came from the end of a kingi drift out on the mud in 100m of water.

> Fishing Report 1 June 2008

The first day of winter and the fishing signalled the arrival of our best fishing season of the year.  With the water in close cooling 10 pound snapper are on tap in the shallows. Fishing with softbaits we're getting a good quality of snapper close to home right through the day.

All of our jigging customers have been catching plenty of big kingfish jigging the seamounts around the Aldermen Islands, 95% of the fish are released to fight another day, with just one or two kingis kept a trip - making sure we keep a healthy recrerational fishery out of Tairua.

Pictured here are brother and sister Emily and Simon Gooder with two primo kingfish that came from a triple hookup before 8am on Queens Birthday weekend.

> Fishing Report 7 May 2008

The weather gods threw everything at us over the last few days, but we came up trumps with some fantastic fishing for kingfish and snapper.

Alex and Simon joined us from Australia on a 5 day kingfish and snapper charter out of Tairua, and one of the best fish of the trip was this primo 20kg kingfish, caught on a slow trolled mullet. We fished a range of spots over the five days including Slipper, The Aldermen Is, and the Mercury Islands from Whitianga.

All produced great snapper on softbaits and kingfish on livies and jigs, proving autumn and winter are still great times to catch NZ sportsfish.

> Fishing Report 14 April 2008

What more could the skipper ask for when he's got the editor of NZ's best fishing mag out fishing? Not only some great kingi fishing but a huge school of hard fighting mahimahi swimming around the boat!  Mahimahi are an occasional catch in the peak of summer on the Coromandel, but in April they are almost unheard of. It was one of those days that will stick in the memory for a long time! Look out for the full story from Mike Rendle in the next Fishing Coast to Coast magazine!

> Fishing Report 5 April 2008

We've got some of the best, bluest water of the year and it is mid Autumn!  The water is 20.5 degrees and there are plenty of marlin being caught in 90m of water.  The kingfish are really starting to fatten up, as you can see from this 20kg beauty caught over the weekend!  We caught a heap of kingis over the weekend, all caught Japanese style jigging at the Aldermen Islands with 200-500gm jigs.

> Fishing Report 30 March

You can't beat the snapper fishing on the Coromandel in Autumn.  Pictured here is a pretty typical 10pd Coromandel snapper caught on a GULP Nuclear Chicken Pogy cast ahead of the drift in 12m of water.  The angler is Ken Hetherington of Auckland.  As you can see the conditions are superb! This fish was caught on top of the Thames coast, near Coromandel harbour.

> Fishing Report 5 March

Australian soft plastic fisherman Dene Moore has just spent a week with us fishing softbaits the whole time, and producing an endless stream of great fighting snapper like the one pictured here.  This one was caught fishing the washes around the Aldermen Islands.  Dene also caught kingis on softbaits and his nephew Cam dived with us for scallops and crayfish to make sure they were well fed in their week long stay in Tairua.

> Fishing Report 23 February 2008

We've just finished six days straight fishing the NZ Nationals.  Anthony Honeybone pictured here fished with us and took out the National trophy for most kingfish tagged and released during the tournament.  All fish were caught on either livebaits near Tairua or jigging the Aldermen Islands.  We had some insane jigging sessions and in total we caught about 70 kingis over the week, placing the team second overall in the tournament. (Ants even made it to the cover of the latest Fishing Coast to Coast magazine!)

> Fishing Report 12 January 2008

What an EPIC day today!  Michael Garrick from Australia is going home shattered after battling a dozen kingis up to 21kg! The kingfish got bigger and bigger as the day went on, and were all caught out of a meatball of jack mackeral on livebait. Throwing poppers into the meatball produced follows of around 20 20kg kingfish.

> Fishing Report 9 January 2008

Thomas and Inger from Denmark have experienced some great kingfish action over the last three days.   Thomas caught the best kingfish jigging at the Aldermen Islands at 18kg, Inger caught one of 16kg on a livebait at the Dogger Bank.  We took a break from the kingi fishing to troll some marlin lures for the first time this season and had three solid hook ups in three hours!  None of them stuck but we are chomping at the bit to get out there for a full days gamefishing - the water looks awesome!

> Fishing Report 19 December 07

We've just come off two days of insane kingfish fishing.  Jigging on some of the pinnacles around the Aldermen islands. We caught and released around 50 kingfish, including this 19kg kingfish caught by Dunedin angler Kelvin Wright.

There are some good snapper around amongst the birds and workups.  Yesterday we came across a big workup of gannets, diving on mackeral in 3m of water close to a reef.  Casting GULP lime tiger and nuclear chicken softbaits into the action netted some good snapper.

The biggest snapper went 14 pound caught by Paul Ashley pictured here, who outdid his brother John on the day with this primo snapper!  We had snapper of about 3kg hammering softbaits right beside the boat - awesome fishing!!!

The guys also had a couple of dives in the morning and came across a fair few nests of crayfish.

> Fishing Report 8 October 07

On the outer reefs we have some great kingfish action at the moment. It is not uncommon to get kingfish of 20kg on the first drop of the jig if you start in the right spot on the reef.

Pictured here is Wayne Merrick of Hong Kong. Wayne came out with us with the objective of catching a big kingfish andhis first NZ snapper.

We acheived both objectives by 9.30am in the morning!!!! Wayne caught a 16kg kingfish first of all and then hooked into a nice 11pound snapper.

> Fishing Report 7 October 07

In closer to Tairua we've got some great snapper fishing at the moment. You can't go past GULP softbait to catch a good sized snapper at the moment.

Just check out this nice 10 pound fish, caught within 5 minutes of Tairua harbour on a GULP lime tiger.

If you are keen to find out how to fish softbaits then why not join us on one of our softbait fishing adventures.

> Fishing Report 20 Sept 07

We've got a great spell of weather at the moment.  The water out wide has heated up over 16 degrees, great for early spring and there are plenty of kingfish around.

Mark Edwards and Adam Bartleigh Smith spent three hours this morning, buckled over non stop on big kingfish, jigging the outer reefs.

This nice 17kg king was the fish of the day.

> Fishing Report 15 Sept 07

The boys from Cathedral Cove Macadamias joined us today for a jigging session out wide.  The lads had a ball on nice sized kingis and Justin Pilkington decided to slip a jig over on some light gear - 15kg mono and hooked this beaut 20kg kingi!!

> Fishing Report 4 August 2007

A big blow last week sent the fish out deep, but they have now moved back in the shallows.

We had a productive couple of hours on the water this morning, with lots of nice snapper, like the 6 pounder for our Thai guest - her first day ever out fishing, not a bad snapper to start out with!

> Fishing Report 29 July 2007

We had our first day on the new boat today - it is a 659 Supercab and is a great step up from our first Stabi (we'll miss her though!).

Aaron Thomas joined us for the maiden voyage and managed to get his first ever kingfish - the biggest going 18kg. He also managed to get his first ever snapper on softbait, not bad at 12 pound! Aaron is seen here taking a bit of ribbing from his mate Brett for catching a big snapper that had his name on it!

This is a great time of year to fish for kingfish and snapper from Tairua and the Eastern Coromandel.  Get in touch if you would like to arrange a fishing charter or expedition in the coming months.

> Fishing Report 15 June 2007

We've got great snapper action in the shallows out from Tairua at the moment.  Lots of 5-10 pd snapper taking softbaits. The Aldermen Is are also fishing well with the hapuka moving in around the 100m mark. Pic'd here is Phill Hayward with a 14pd Coromandel snapper - his first ever snapper on a softbait in his first 5 minutes trying!!

> Fishing Report 21 May 2007

The snapper are in real close to Tairua now, and we're having real fun catching them on softbaits. There are still plenty of kingi's around. Carl Edwards caught this fat as 16kg king with us at the Aldermen Is, proving he likes a big of 'jiggy-jiggy'.!'

> Fishing Report 25 Apr 2007

Jack Harper from Australia with a Coromandel kingfish hooked on a small kahawai livebait, fishing with us on ANZAC day. We had heaps trevally in the burley trail, and nabbed a few crays for dinner as well!  Jack and his wife Yvonne had a great week long stay with us in Tairua and will be back again later in the year!

> Fishing Update 21 Apr 2007

Scott Fergusson with a very nice 40lb kingi caught amongst the many prolific kahawai we have around Tairua at the moment.

This fish was caught on 15lb gear, one of the new rods and reels Pure Fishing have given to us to try out this softbaiting caper.  Well - it not only works - we're catching bigger fish and not just snapper.  This kingi took around 1 1/2 hours to land on the light gear - now that is an epic battle!   And on his honeymoon no less!!

> Fishing Update 14 Apr 2007

'Chalky' White with the first kingfish of the day - respectable at 14kg.

Two more kingis were caught by 8.30am, the biggest going 19.2kg. A great morning fishing on the sunny Coromandel!

We had boats zooming past us wondering what we were doing, well we were only 100m off the Kuaotunu boat ramp - it just goes to show - fish your feet first!!

> Fishing Update 6 Apr 2007

The kingi's are on fire!  This was one of six big kingis caught in a ballistic fishing session wide of the Aldermen Islands this morning, fishing big jigs. This nice 16kg king makes the very solid Ben 'Pies' Allen look slim!

> Fishing Update 22 Feb 2007

The kingi's are thick now!  This beauty 20kg New Zealand kingi was one of two caught livebaiting by John Golding (Wales) in our first hour of fishing today!!  This fish was caught in the shallows and with azure blue water it was in sight of the boat for most of the fight.

John went on to catch a dozen albacore as well in a great days fishing.

> Fishing Update 28 Jan 2007

Our biggest king this season at 22.3kgs (50pound) wins the kingi section of Tairua Stand up comp, a nice new Shimano Tyrnos to add to the collection of kingi reels!   Caught on a 400gm Black Magic green and gold jig - speed jigging in 20m of water no less!!!

> Fishing Update 24 Jan 2007

The kingi's are getting bigger!  Dave Cross (UK) landed this beauty - close on 40pd - inside the Aldermen Is group, our magic Black Magic 400gm green and gold jig. Dave went hard all day and was rewarded with the fish of a lifetime!  Dave was on his annual holiday to fish New Zealand.

> Fishing Update 16 Jan 2007

The snapper have moved in from the deep. Lonnie McAlister (USA) hooked this nice 25 pd snapper at the Aldermen Is on 15 Jan.  Lonnie stayed with us for a week and had some awesome fishing, mind you beating a 12kg snapper and 12kg kingfish both caught on livebaits in his first hour fishing with us was hard to top for the rest of the trip!!  Lonnie also check out the rest of the Coromandel's great spots including Cathedral Cove and Hot Water beach on our days off the water.

> Fishing Update 20 Dec 2006

It's kingfish time! Our guests have been having a ball on nice size kingi's which are now prevalent over most of the reefs outside Tairua. Pictured opposite is a typical sized king taken by Dean Ruscoe just before Christmas 06 at Shoe Island.  This trip was a quick afternoon trip from 4pm-8pm and working some diving gannets we picked up this primo kingfish on our new Pioneer jig rod before doing a dusk fish for snapper at Slipper Island.

     CALENDAR - When to fish!

Fishing New Zealand and the Coromandel is possible year round.   Our summers are legendary and our winters on the Coromandel are very mild - well above the New Zealand norm.

The calendar below gives you a good guide as to what to expect each month if you are coming from overseas.

JANUARY

A very busy time on the Coromandel with NZ summer holidays.  The start of the really good summer weather!  Snapper tend to be out deeper schooled over the sand.  Huge numbers of kingfish in close means we don't need to go to far from shore.  Livebaiting for kingfish the fish in close is our most popular form of fishing at this time of year, and a few of the closer pins right inside the Aldermen Islands group hold huge schools of kingis meaning at the right time, jigging can be red hot.   Gamefish like marlin and tuna are starting to run down the coast and Tairua holds its Stand Up tournament in the last weekend of January.

FEBRUARY

The crowds have largely disappeared but this is the best month weather wise and water temperature usually peaks in Feb. The second weekend in February is Tairua's light tackle competition, and the middle week is the eight day NZ Nationals.  Again the kingfish are in huge schools in close harassing baitfish along the coastline.  This is probably the best month to target gamefish.

MARCH

March is still essentially summer weather, the water temperature holds up around 20 degrees and very nice settled weather is the norm.  The kingfish are starting to congregate in some of our best jigging haunts and fattening up.  Snapper are starting to spread out a little more, and can be found from deep to in around the washes around the many islands. The scallop season ends in April, so it is compulsory to sample some of these tasty morsels before the season closes! March is also the time of our Tairua Ladies competition, on the second Saturday of March.

APRIL

April would have to be one of our favourite times to best fishing on the Coromandel.  It really is the best of all seasons, with the water temp still holding, but the days getting shorter and dusk coming earlier meaning it is great for targetting big snapper.  The kingis are really starting to fire and Japenese style mechanical jigging can see some days where 100+ kingis is not out of the question (bring some spare arms!) The last weekend of April sees the Kings of the Coromandel tournament held
www.kingsofthecoromandel.co.nz

MAY

The most consistent month for kingis in the 20kg plus category, both in close to shore livebaiting and out wide jigging.  May is simply awesome!!

JUNE

Softbaiting and fishing the shallows really comes into its own in June.  The snapper have spread out and are all packed in very close to the shore.  Drifting along the coastline and casting soft plastics to where snapper might be holding is the most productive form of fishing during the day.  Around dawn and dusk we set a good burley trail and strayline baits down the current to fish drawn into the trail.  Great snapper fishing!! There are still plenty of kings around out wideand this is the time the real monsters lurk the coastline ready to pounce on a big livebait.

JULY

July is considered the middle of winter, but on the east coast of the Coromandel (the majority of the weather comes from the west) conditions are usually very mild.  There is a great variety of fishing over winter as a lot of the bottom dwellers like Hapuka (our groper) and terahaki, both some of our best eating fish move into shallower water.  July is one of the best times to target a trophy snapper or kingfish, as the smaller fish have thinned out leaving the bigger resident fish.

AUGUST

Again a superb time to be softbaiting for snapper.  We've caught some of our best snapper softbaiting within minutes of Tairua harbour mouth during August.  August is also when the commercial scallop season starts and with that comes our local Scallop Festival.  A great time to visit, fish and indulge in some great Coromandel cuisine.

SEPTEMBER

September marks the arrival of spring and you can notice the change in the season markedly.  Lots of still crisp days and the water temp starts to rise out wide to about 16-17 degrees(although it stays pretty cool in close14-15 degree).  The kingis are about as fat on our jigging reefs as they get, in preparation for spawning over the next few months.

OCTOBER

More awesome spring fishing, the whole ocean is alive with huge schools of surface feeding kahawai.  The are birds, dolphins, whales and school fish everywhere. Tairua holds a snapper competition in the last weekend of October, which is a long weekend, Labour weekend.

NOVEMBER

Again, huge schools of kahawai are present over a lot of the reefs, the water is still cool enough to kind Hapuka and terahaki in as close as they come.  The snapper have moved out deep and are schooling up for spawning.  Still good jigging out wide but the kingis have lost a fair bit of condition.

DECEMBER

The start of the migration of bigger kingis into our inshore fisher.  Good sized kingis can be found on most reefs in close.  Awesome fishing for generally all New Zealand sportsfish.
