> Fishing Report 1 June 2008

The first day of winter and the fishing signalled the arrival of our best fishing season of the year.  With the water in close cooling 10 pound snapper are on tap in the shallows. Fishing with softbaits we're getting a good quality of snapper close to home right through the day.

All of our jigging customers have been catching plenty of big kingfish jigging the seamounts around the Aldermen Islands, 95% of the fish are released to fight another day, with just one or two kingis kept a trip - making sure we keep a healthy recrerational fishery out of Tairua.

Pictured here are brother and sister Emily and Simon Gooder with two primo kingfish that came from a triple hookup before 8am on Queens Birthday weekend.

> Fishing Report 7 May 2008

The weather gods threw everything at us over the last few days, but we came up trumps with some fantastic fishing for kingfish and snapper.

Alex and Simon joined us from Australia on a 5 day kingfish and snapper charter out of Tairua, and one of the best fish of the trip was this primo 20kg kingfish, caught on a slow trolled mullet. We fished a range of spots over the five days including Slipper, The Aldermen Is, and the Mercury Islands from Whitianga.

All produced great snapper on softbaits and kingfish on livies and jigs, proving autumn and winter are still great times to catch NZ sportsfish.

What more could the skipper ask for when he's got the editor of NZ's best fishing mag out fishing? Not only some great kingi fishing but a huge school of hard fighting mahimahi swimming around the boat!  Mahimahi are an occasional catch in the peak of summer on the Coromandel, but in April they are almost unheard of. It was one of those days that will stick in the memory for a long time! Look out for the full story from Mike Rendle in the next Fishing Coast to Coast magazine!

> Fishing Report 5 April 2008

We've got some of the best, bluest water of the year and it is mid Autumn!  The water is 20.5 degrees and there are plenty of marlin being caught in 90m of water.  The kingfish are really starting to fatten up, as you can see from this 20kg beauty caught over the weekend!  We caught a heap of kingis over the weekend, all caught Japanese style jigging at the Aldermen Islands with 200-500gm jigs.

> Fishing Report 30 March

You can't beat the snapper fishing on the Coromandel in Autumn.  Pictured here is a pretty typical 10pd Coromandel snapper caught on a GULP Nuclear Chicken Pogy cast ahead of the drift in 12m of water.  The angler is Ken Hetherington of Auckland.  As you can see the conditions are superb! This fish was caught on top of the Thames coast, near Coromandel harbour.

> Fishing Report 5 March

Australian soft plastic fisherman Dene Moore has just spent a week with us fishing softbaits the whole time, and producing an endless stream of great fighting snapper like the one pictured here.  This one was caught fishing the washes around the Aldermen Islands.  Dene also caught kingis on softbaits and his nephew Cam dived with us for scallops and crayfish to make sure they were well fed in their week long stay in Tairua.

> Fishing Report 23 February 2008

We've just finished six days straight fishing the NZ Nationals.  Anthony Honeybone pictured here fished with us and took out the National trophy for most kingfish tagged and released during the tournament.  All fish were caught on either livebaits near Tairua or jigging the Aldermen Islands.  We had some insane jigging sessions and in total we caught about 70 kingis over the week, placing the team second overall in the tournament. (Ants even made it to the cover of the latest Fishing Coast to Coast magazine!)

> Fishing Report 12 January 2008

What an EPIC day today!  Michael Garrick from Australia is going home shattered after battling a dozen kingis up to 21kg! The kingfish got bigger and bigger as the day went on, and were all caught out of a meatball of jack mackeral on livebait. Throwing poppers into the meatball produced follows of around 20 20kg kingfish.

> Fishing Report 9 January 2008

Thomas and Inger from Denmark have experienced some great kingfish action over the last three days.   Thomas caught the best kingfish jigging at the Aldermen Islands at 18kg, Inger caught one of 16kg on a livebait at the Dogger Bank.  We took a break from the kingi fishing to troll some marlin lures for the first time this season and had three solid hook ups in three hours!  None of them stuck but we are chomping at the bit to get out there for a full days gamefishing - the water looks awesome!

> Fishing Report 19 December 07

We've just come off two days of insane kingfish fishing.  Jigging on some of the pinnacles around the Aldermen islands. We caught and released around 50 kingfish, including this 19kg kingfish caught by Dunedin angler Kelvin Wright.

> Fishing Report 14 October

There are some good snapper around amongst the birds and workups.  Yesterday we came across a big workup of gannets, diving on mackeral in 3m of water close to a reef.  Casting GULP lime tiger and nuclear chicken softbaits into the action netted some good snapper.

The biggest snapper went 14 pound caught by Paul Ashley pictured here, who outdid his brother John on the day with this primo snapper!  We had snapper of about 3kg hammering softbaits right beside the boat - awesome fishing!!!

The guys also had a couple of dives in the morning and came across a fair few nests of crayfish.

> Fishing Report 8 October 07

On the outer reefs we have some great kingfish action at the moment. It is not uncommon to get kingfish of 20kg on the first drop of the jig if you start in the right spot on the reef.

Pictured here is Wayne Merrick of Hong Kong. Wayne came out with us with the objective of catching a big kingfish andhis first NZ snapper.

We acheived both objectives by 9.30am in the morning!!!! Wayne caught a 16kg kingfish first of all and then hooked into a nice 11pound snapper.

> Fishing Report 7 October 07

In closer to Tairua we've got some great snapper fishing at the moment. You can't go past GULP softbait to catch a good sized snapper at the moment.

Just check out this nice 10 pound fish, caught within 5 minutes of Tairua harbour on a GULP lime tiger.

If you are keen to find out how to fish softbaits then why not join us on one of our softbait fishing adventures.

> Fishing Report 20 Sept 07

We've got a great spell of weather at the moment.  The water out wide has heated up over 16 degrees, great for early spring and there are plenty of kingfish around.

Mark Edwards and Adam Bartleigh Smith spent three hours this morning, buckled over non stop on big kingfish, jigging the outer reefs.

This nice 17kg king was the fish of the day.

> Fishing Report 15 Sept 07

The boys from Cathedral Cove Macadamias joined us today for a jigging session out wide.  The lads had a ball on nice sized kingis and Justin Pilkington decided to slip a jig over on some light gear - 15kg mono and hooked this beaut 20kg kingi!!

> Fishing Report 4 August 2007

A big blow last week sent the fish out deep, but they have now moved back in the shallows.

We had a productive couple of hours on the water this morning, with lots of nice snapper, like the 6 pounder for our Thai guest - her first day ever out fishing, not a bad snapper to start out with!

> Fishing Report 29 July 2007

We had our first day on the new boat today - it is a 659 Supercab and is a great step up from our first Stabi (we'll miss her though!).

Aaron Thomas joined us for the maiden voyage and managed to get his first ever kingfish - the biggest going 18kg. He also managed to get his first ever snapper on softbait, not bad at 12 pound! Aaron is seen here taking a bit of ribbing from his mate Brett for catching a big snapper that had his name on it!

This is a great time of year to fish for kingfish and snapper from Tairua and the Eastern Coromandel.  Get in touch if you would like to arrange a fishing charter or expedition in the coming months.

> Fishing Report 15 June 2007

We've got great snapper action in the shallows out from Tairua at the moment.  Lots of 5-10 pd snapper taking softbaits. The Aldermen Is are also fishing well with the hapuka moving in around the 100m mark. Pic'd here is Phill Hayward with a 14pd Coromandel snapper - his first ever snapper on a softbait in his first 5 minutes trying!!

> Fishing Report 21 May 2007

The snapper are in real close to Tairua now, and we're having real fun catching them on softbaits. There are still plenty of kingi's around. Carl Edwards caught this fat as 16kg king with us at the Aldermen Is, proving he likes a big of 'jiggy-jiggy'.!'

> Fishing Report 25 Apr 2007

Jack Harper from Australia with a Coromandel kingfish hooked on a small kahawai livebait, fishing with us on ANZAC day. We had heaps trevally in the burley trail, and nabbed a few crays for dinner as well!  Jack and his wife Yvonne had a great week long stay with us in Tairua and will be back again later in the year!

> Fishing Update 21 Apr 2007

Scott Fergusson with a very nice 40lb kingi caught amongst the many prolific kahawai we have around Tairua at the moment.

This fish was caught on 15lb gear, one of the new rods and reels Pure Fishing have given to us to try out this softbaiting caper.  Well - it not only works - we're catching bigger fish and not just snapper.  This kingi took around 1 1/2 hours to land on the light gear - now that is an epic battle!   And on his honeymoon no less!!

> Fishing Update 14 Apr 2007

'Chalky' White with the first kingfish of the day - respectable at 14kg.

Two more kingis were caught by 8.30am, the biggest going 19.2kg. A great morning fishing on the sunny Coromandel!

We had boats zooming past us wondering what we were doing, well we were only 100m off the Kuaotunu boat ramp - it just goes to show - fish your feet first!!

> Fishing Update 6 Apr 2007

The kingi's are on fire!  This was one of six big kingis caught in a ballistic fishing session wide of the Aldermen Islands this morning, fishing big jigs. This nice 16kg king makes the very solid Ben 'Pies' Allen look slim!

> Fishing Update 22 Feb 2007

The kingi's are thick now!  This beauty 20kg New Zealand kingi was one of two caught livebaiting by John Golding (Wales) in our first hour of fishing today!!  This fish was caught in the shallows and with azure blue water it was in sight of the boat for most of the fight.

John went on to catch a dozen albacore as well in a great days fishing.

> Fishing Update 28 Jan 2007

Our biggest king this season at 22.3kgs (50pound) wins the kingi section of Tairua Stand up comp, a nice new Shimano Tyrnos to add to the collection of kingi reels!   Caught on a 400gm Black Magic green and gold jig - speed jigging in 20m of water no less!!!

> Fishing Update 24 Jan 2007

The kingi's are getting bigger!  Dave Cross (UK) landed this beauty - close on 40pd - inside the Aldermen Is group, our magic Black Magic 400gm green and gold jig. Dave went hard all day and was rewarded with the fish of a lifetime!  Dave was on his annual holiday to fish New Zealand.

> Fishing Update 16 Jan 2007

The snapper have moved in from the deep. Lonnie McAlister (USA) hooked this nice 25 pd snapper at the Aldermen Is on 15 Jan.  Lonnie stayed with us for a week and had some awesome fishing, mind you beating a 12kg snapper and 12kg kingfish both caught on livebaits in his first hour fishing with us was hard to top for the rest of the trip!!  Lonnie also check out the rest of the Coromandel's great spots including Cathedral Cove and Hot Water beach on our days off the water.

> Fishing Update 6 Jan 2007

It's kingfish time! Our guests have been having a ball on nice size kingi's which are now prevalent over most of the reefs outside Tairua. Pictured opposite is a typical sized king taken by Dean Ruscoe just before Christmas 06 at Shoe Island.  This trip was a quick afternoon trip from 4pm-8pm and working some diving gannets we picked up this primo kingfish on our new Pioneer jig rod before doing a dusk fish for snapper at Slipper Island.

     CALENDAR - When to fish!

Fishing New Zealand and the Coromandel is possible year round.   Our summers are legendary and our winters on the Coromandel are very mild - well above the New Zealand norm.

The calendar below gives you a good guide as to what to expect each month if you are coming from overseas.

JANUARY

A very busy time on the Coromandel with NZ summer holidays.  The start of the really good summer weather!  Snapper tend to be out deeper schooled over the sand.  Huge numbers of kingfish in close means we don't need to go to far from shore.  Livebaiting for kingfish the fish in close is our most popular form of fishing at this time of year, and a few of the closer pins right inside the Aldermen Islands group hold huge schools of kingis meaning at the right time, jigging can be red hot.   Gamefish like marlin and tuna are starting to run down the coast and Tairua holds its Stand Up tournament in the last weekend of January.

FEBRUARY

The crowds have largely disappeared but this is the best month weather wise and water temperature usually peaks in Feb. The second weekend in February is Tairua's light tackle competition, and the middle week is the eight day NZ Nationals.  Again the kingfish are in huge schools in close harassing baitfish along the coastline.  This is probably the best month to target gamefish.

MARCH

March is still essentially summer weather, the water temperature holds up around 20 degrees and very nice settled weather is the norm.  The kingfish are starting to congregate in some of our best jigging haunts and fattening up.  Snapper are starting to spread out a little more, and can be found from deep to in around the washes around the many islands. The scallop season ends in April, so it is compulsory to sample some of these tasty morsels before the season closes! March is also the time of our Tairua Ladies competition, on the second Saturday of March.

APRIL

April would have to be one of our favourite times to best fishing on the Coromandel.  It really is the best of all seasons, with the water temp still holding, but the days getting shorter and dusk coming earlier meaning it is great for targetting big snapper.  The kingis are really starting to fire and Japenese style mechanical jigging can see some days where 100+ kingis is not out of the question (bring some spare arms!) The last weekend of April sees the Kings of the Coromandel tournament held
www.kingsofthecoromandel.co.nz

MAY

The most consistent month for kingis in the 20kg plus category, both in close to shore livebaiting and out wide jigging.  May is simply awesome!!

JUNE

Softbaiting and fishing the shallows really comes into its own in June.  The snapper have spread out and are all packed in very close to the shore.  Drifting along the coastline and casting soft plastics to where snapper might be holding is the most productive form of fishing during the day.  Around dawn and dusk we set a good burley trail and strayline baits down the current to fish drawn into the trail.  Great snapper fishing!! There are still plenty of kings around out wideand this is the time the real monsters lurk the coastline ready to pounce on a big livebait.

JULY

July is considered the middle of winter, but on the east coast of the Coromandel (the majority of the weather comes from the west) conditions are usually very mild.  There is a great variety of fishing over winter as a lot of the bottom dwellers like Hapuka (our groper) and terahaki, both some of our best eating fish move into shallower water.  July is one of the best times to target a trophy snapper or kingfish, as the smaller fish have thinned out leaving the bigger resident fish.

AUGUST

Again a superb time to be softbaiting for snapper.  We've caught some of our best snapper softbaiting within minutes of Tairua harbour mouth during August.  August is also when the commercial scallop season starts and with that comes our local Scallop Festival.  A great time to visit, fish and indulge in some great Coromandel cuisine.

SEPTEMBER

September marks the arrival of spring and you can notice the change in the season markedly.  Lots of still crisp days and the water temp starts to rise out wide to about 16-17 degrees(although it stays pretty cool in close14-15 degree).  The kingis are about as fat on our jigging reefs as they get, in preparation for spawning over the next few months.

OCTOBER

More awesome spring fishing, the whole ocean is alive with huge schools of surface feeding kahawai.  The are birds, dolphins, whales and school fish everywhere. Tairua holds a snapper competition in the last weekend of October, which is a long weekend, Labour weekend.

NOVEMBER

Again, huge schools of kahawai are present over a lot of the reefs, the water is still cool enough to kind Hapuka and terahaki in as close as they come.  The snapper have moved out deep and are schooling up for spawning.  Still good jigging out wide but the kingis have lost a fair bit of condition.

DECEMBER

The start of the migration of bigger kingis into our inshore fisher.  Good sized kingis can be found on most reefs in close.  Awesome fishing for generally all New Zealand sportsfish.
