The fishing across the upper North Island has ben EPIC. The Sharks have largely stayed away, the kingfish have been feeding up hard and smashing our baits most days.
Skippers have been mixing it up with plenty of slow trolling livies to our usual dropper rigs, all have been doing the business.
Mercury bay off Whitiaga has been full of bait fish and this has allowed the crews to get out into the action early. We are still seeing plenty of hooks ups in the bait grounds on the light gear which is keeping everyone on their toes!
The water is warmer and there have been plenty of pelagics seen and knocking around, Capt Chase on EPIC had a crack on his day off and they landed this awesome marlin. Had to share it with you!
The weather has been pretty awesome with weeks of settled weather lately, for some though the seas or winds have meant cancellations which happens with fishing… hope you can come back and smash some kings with us next time!
Did you know that we can take care of your accommodation and transfer needs too? We have deals in place to get you to the fishing locations and keep you comfortable!

The skippers have been enjoying the fine weather after a rough start to spring. Summer is here and the fishing has been awesome.
We have been posting the photos of each days catch on our social media platforms and a few have been exceptional! We had a guest from America Sean that caught one of the larger Kingfish for the month (main photo below) and then there is the XXL snapper (photo above) caught by a keen lady angler this week.
All boats are all out trying their favourite spots so we are ready to get you and your crew out there and into whatever the summer season brings.
Our Bay of Islands boat KOROKING with Capt Kit has been busy looking after the Northland tourism sector. There have been plenty of large schools of Kings on the pins and its worth spending time to get some ‘livies’ before heading out. Snapper have been on the bite and we have seen a few caught and released close to the 20lb mark.
Up North, we offer a half-day snapper experience for those wanting to get onto the water to experience the beauty of the Bay of Islands and or to try their luck at some of the local kingfish.
We also offer a full day kingfish experience and we have seen plenty of satisfied customers posting great photos of their Northland Kingfish.
The Christmas and New Year period is particularly busy up North as the population explodes for summer so please get your bookings in early to avoid disappointment.
Epic is stoked to be working with Legasea and digital fish in an effort to tag and track big kingfish. Now we give guests the option on any kingfish over 20kg to tag the fish and release it for further study.
This is optional and our 1 kingfish per person limit still applies.
Hopefully, this will provide scientists with valuable insights into our kingfish.
Congrats to James Macmillan who is the lucky recipient of the Maxel Hybrid reel and Jigstar rod, I am sure you will love this combo as much as we do!
NOVEMBER 2019 FISHING REPORT
I know we keep saying it but we could have a photo gallery pages long trying to showcase all of the amazing fish that have been in the area over the last few months, and it doesn’t show any signs of letting up.
Our 3 big Senator boats in the Coromandel, KAOS, EPIC and CHURCH have been super busy for so early in the season. An indication of how hot the bite has been and how keen people have been to get out there and into it.
On of the highlights for the month has been the super sized Hapukau featured above caught on KAOS with Capt Owen by one hard core lady angler who did a great job in getting it up.
While we don’t normally target the big bottom feeding species there have been plenty around and Capt Ryan on CHURCH has found a few new honey holes in our patch that is home to some very nice bluenose too.
Kingfish have been plentiful, fat and angry! Some horses have been rattling a few bodies and really testing our gear and guests alike!
Check out our facebook, instagram or website for the photos of the EPIC days fishing we have been having.
The Bay of Islands with Capt KIT has also been productive with solid Kingfish numbers in close and out on the pins.
Snapper seem to be in good numbers and we look set for a good summers fishing out of Russell and Paihia. Hopefully when the water starts to warm up a bit we will see the Pelagics start to cruise the coast again and some lucky anglers will be in for the ride of their lives trying to fight a game fish on our kingfish gear.
If you are looking for a top staff XMAS trip then get your bookings in for December, we have spaces still available!
Half day snapper trip are available from the Bay of Islands so if you’re keen on a family day out on the water, just give us a dial!
Most of the fish caught on epic adventures charters are released as we have a strict 1 kingfish per person limit and with most guests being tourists they often have a quick photo and release them all.
Fishing is well and truly starting to fire up and down the coast. With some tired anglers coming off the boats. We have a few stormy days this spring which hasn’t been ideal and the skippers have had to move around to find the fish but when they do its been ON!
Don’t take our word for it read some of the hundreds of reviews / testimonials and see why people choose to fish epic adventures !

Epic are stoked to partner with Auckland Air to offer the Epic Fly in Fly kingfish experience.
Whitianga is approximately a 3 hour drive from Auckland, some of which is along the scenic Coromandel coast and well worth the effort. But did you know that you can now choose to fly between Auckland and Whitianga in just 30 minutes!
Thats right, you can take an Air Auckland flight from Ardmore airport (South Auckland) and fly to the kingfish HQ of New Zealand. We recommend you fly the night before so you don’t miss the boat. Speak to us if you are interested.
Spring fishing is well and truly here and the epic fleet has been busy. The newest arrival to the fleet is replacement CHURCH another Senator RH 770. Her skipper Capt Ryan is loving it and has been itching to get into the action.
We are still seeing patches of winter weather but that hasn’t cooled the fishing. We are getting daily posts from the skippers showing decent kingfish all around. The lady guest anglers have been great to have on-board and have consistently shown the lads up with some impressive catches.
Not to be outdone the Bay of Islands has really started to crank up as well. Capt Kit had his crew from Australia over the weekend busy and came home with sore arms and plenty of smiles on dials after plenty of kingfish action. This XXL version by far the fish of the day. Nice work guys.
Great looking Bay of Islands Kingfish caught on KOROKING with Capt KIT.
The latest RH 770 Senator to join the Epic Fleet the new CHURCH.
Come and check her out and get into some awesome fishing action with Epic Adventures and Capt Ryan
MONTHLY FISHING REPORTS
We are super stoked to now have an ALL Senator boat fleet. These rigs are super comfy and stable and we wouldn’t want any other hull type for our guests.
The newest arrival is the new CHURCH for Capt Ryan. She went into Survey last week and Capt Ryan is frothing to get you out and into them. Capt Chase has enjoyed a well earned break and Capt Owen has been leading the charge in Whitianga over winter on KAOS.
The Weather has seen typical late Winter early Spring conditions with stunning days mixed with horrible. Capt Owen has been doing his thing and moving up and down the coast to put guests onto the best fishing for the season. There are a lot of sharks around so you need to be quick or lucky when you hook up. Sometimes its best to try another pin than to take on the tax man. We have seen some awesome sized snapper in the last few weeks, and plenty of solid kings around. Several nudging the 20kg mark.
Capt KIT on KOROKING up in the Bay of Islands has seen a rush of early season bookings with plenty of guests keen to get into fishing and not wanting to wait for things to warm up.
Guests on KOROKING have seen plenty of good kingfish come up and there have been a few beats that we couldn’t stop even with our awesome Kingfish rigs we have on board. The sharks are around up North too so don’t be afraid to move around to try and shake them free.
So plenty of good early season fishing for those looking to head out up North.
The last month the fishing has been great!
The majority of the fishing that the Coromandel based boats have been doing has been in the shallows, in close around the islands to the north and south. This is good as it offers something different and the quality of the fish has been amazing!
There have been multiple fish over the 20kg mark with a nice intense fight in less than 20m of water.
The bait in the bay has been good with it not taking to long at all to grab a tank full of the Kingfish lollipops.
It has also been nice to catch the odd Kingfish in among the schools making for an awesome start to the days fishing!
The Snapper have also been around in good numbers, not taking long to grab a nice feed of fat snaps to take home which is a good way to end an awesome day fishing! – Capt RYAN
Bay of Islands Fishing report:
Well here we are in May, the days are shorter and the temperatures are certainly cooler here in the Bay of Islands.
But the fish are still here. Along with Koro King, has been catching some nice fat snapper, this has been the feedback from all the local skippers.
Kahawai, trevally, and john dory are also a tasty bycatch. The bait schools, although elusive at times, have kept the king’s active around the Bay. So if you’re in the area guys, don’t be shy, grab a seat with Epic and Koro King and come enjoy our beautiful home.
Our Half day snapper trips that we run out of Russell and Paihia have proven to be popular with the large numbers of tourists passing through the area. If you are short on time and want to get your fishing fix on its a good quick option!.
cheers – the Epic Crew

A few shots from the last month or so – Plenty of nice fish around!
Fishing out of Whitianga this month has been great from shallow water to out in the deep the kingfish have been on the chew. The bait has been good in the bay most of the time except for after the big easterly blow which made things a lot harder for a while. Curvier has been fishing well, most of the rocks up there seem to be holding good numbers of Kingfish with a welcome by catch of some nice Snapper and the odd Hapuku.
We are looking forward to see what the rest of February and March bring us!
After a spate of crappy easterly weather patterns over the fisrt fortnight of the month, it was great to have calmer days in the Bay, the sun was shining and the kingis have been biting.
We have had great success on our shorter half day snapper trips around the bay with guest anglers each day getting a feed on reasonable size fish out of the shallows. Good to see a wide age range of fisho’s too, proving you are never to old to enjoy fishing!
Our Kingfish trips out of Russell and Paihia have really been picking up with lots action and some larger sized models turning up.
