FAQs

Epic Adventures is one of the biggest and oldest fishing charter operators in the Coromandel.

We have a team of the best skippers in each region with Capt Owen (on KAOS) and Capt Nick (on Stack Attack) operating out of Whitianga, and Capt Bryce (on Yuwindi 2) operating out of Stewart Island and Fiordland.

Epic is pleased to again be working with the team at Anglers Lodge in Amodeo Bay. This is the fisho’s dream with calm waters, mussel farms, rock fishing, and kingfish options close to the resort.  Anglers Lodge is on the West Coast of the Coromandel Peninsula and is a fantastic addition to any fisherman’s trip away. Solid Yellowtail Kingfish caught on an Epic Adventures charter

Epic Adventures…NZ Fishing as it Should Be!

The Experience
Guests come to Epic Adventures for the chance to be hit by a large yellowtail kingfish. Our skippers are the best and know where to put you on the fish. While it’s not guaranteed that you will catch your dream fish, it’s extremely rare for someone to miss out on the arm stretching experience that comes with catching one of these freight trains of the sea.

What does a typical day with Epic Look like?

Epic normally fish using live bait, which we normally spend the first hour or so gathering with you, this is often good fun and as kingfish eat these baitfish, guests are often hit on this lightest of gear… which causes some excitement! We do also stock a range of the best Catch jigs which we use when the ‘livies’ aren’t working.

depart 7am return normally at 3.30pm.

Tank of livebaits on a Epic Kingfish charter
A tank full of livies… Kingfish lollipops..

Once we have a tank full of livies you will motor out of any of our favorite deepwater locations. Your skipper will use his state-of-the-art electronics to locate the best schools of fish and then tells you how many colours (our braid is coloured normally to every 10 m)  to drop.  A then you HOLD ON and wait…

What about Clothing?
You are responsible for your own comfort when it comes to clothing. We recommend everyone packs a jacket in case the wind gets up.

Do I need to bring my own fishing gear?
No, you are welcome too, but we provide the absolute best gear suited to the task (Daiwa – Saltiga and Maxel reels paired with jigstar rods.)

Do you fillet the fish as part of the service?
While its not part of the service, our skippers are normally happy to help out especially if there is an offer of a beer or two afterwards.

Can you smoke the fish for us?
Yes, Only available in Whitianga,  we use Blink Smokehouse, which is an awesome service. With the fish smoked you are normally able to take your catch back overseas if you are a visitor to NZ.

How many fish can I keep?
To help protect our fantastic fisheries, Epic Adventures have a strict 1 kingfish kept per person policy (don’t worry 1 kingfish is a lot of meat).

However, most of our foreign guests come for the sport and are happy to release all of their kingfish catch to fight another day.

While we target kingfish and are renown for our kingfish charters we are fishing deep water pins and there is an exciting variety of string-pulling fish that live down there.. we often catch snapper, john dory, hapuka (groper), Bass, plenty of sharks (goes with the territory) and in warmer months we see marlin, tuna and sometimes mahi mahi in the gear. Other species bag limits are as per the local fisheries regulations.
